Section 159: Filling of electoral vacancies
Constitution of Zimbabwe
Whenever a vacancy occurs in any elective public office established in terms of this Constitution, other than an office to which section 158 applies, the authority charged with organising elections to that body must cause an election to be held within ninety days to fill the vacancy.
PART 3
D ELIMITATION OF ELECTORAL B OUNDARIES
Insight on Filling of Electoral Vacancies
This provision ensures democratic continuity by mandating prompt replacement of vacant elected positions. The 90-day timeframe prevents prolonged representation gaps and maintains governmental functionality. Unlike positions covered by section 158 (which likely addresses specific offices with different vacancy procedures), this section creates a universal standard for most elective offices, promoting accountability and responsive governance.
