Section 58: Freedom of assembly and association
Constitution of Zimbabwe
(1) Every person has the right to freedom of assembly and association, and the right not to assemble or associate with others.
(2) No person may be compelled to belong to an association or to attend a meeting or gathering.
This section establishes both positive and negative liberty rights. It not only protects people's freedom to assemble and associate with others but also explicitly protects their right not to do so. This dual protection is significant because it safeguards individuals from forced participation in political, social, or other group activities—a protection particularly important in contexts where mandatory attendance at political rallies or forced membership in organizations has been used as a tool of control.
