Section 280: Traditional leadership
Constitution of Zimbabwe
(1) The institution, status and role of traditional leaders under customary law are recognised.
(2) A traditional leader is responsible for performing the cultural, customary and traditional functions of a Chief, head person or village head, as the case may be, for his or her community.
Insight on Traditional Leadership
This section formally acknowledges Zimbabwe's dual legal system by recognizing traditional governance structures alongside modern constitutional government. By constitutionally protecting traditional leadership, Zimbabwe preserves indigenous cultural authority while integrating these pre-colonial institutions into its contemporary legal framework. This recognition reflects the ongoing importance of customary practices in the daily lives of many Zimbabweans, especially in rural communities.
