Section 23: Veterans of the liberation struggle
Constitution of Zimbabwe
(1) The State and all institutions and agencies of government at every level must accord due respect, honour and recognition to veterans of the liberation struggle, that is to say—
(a) those who fought in the War of Liberation;
(b) those who assisted the fighters in the War of Liberation; and
(c) those who were imprisoned, detained or restricted for political reasons during the
liberation struggle.
(2) The State must take reasonable measures, including legislative measures, for the welfare and economic empowerment of veterans of the liberation struggle.
Insight: Recognition and Support for Liberation Heroes
This section establishes a constitutional obligation for Zimbabwe to honor those who contributed to its independence. It goes beyond mere symbolic recognition by requiring the government to implement practical measures for veterans' economic wellbeing. This reflects the central importance of the liberation struggle to Zimbabwe's national identity and acknowledges the ongoing responsibility to support those who sacrificed for the country's freedom.
